Mediterranean herbaceous vegetation response to high animal density and grazing deferment: Implications for management and conservation

چکیده
Widely -contrasting stocking rates and grazing schedule treatments were imposed upon a Mediterranean herbaceous community in northern Israel. Botanical composition was monitored for 3 years. The vegetative community was found to be highly resilient to the treatments. Perennial grasses and legumes were among the resilient plants. These results are consistent with the view that Mediterranean ecosystems have inherent adaptations to disturbances such-as grazing due to their long history of association with human activity. If these findings persist over time, they may affect the conceptual basis for sustainable grazing management in Mediterranean grasslands by allowing higher grazing pressures than are currently recommended. Moreover, heavy cattle grazing should then be considered as a potential management tool for maintaining high biodiversity in Mediterranean grassland ecosystems.

Vegetation Dynamics in Relation to Grazing Management Practices in Semi-arid Grazing Lands of Makueni County, Kenya
Livestock grazing practices in rangelands are being recognized as management tool for environmental protection and increased livestock productivity. Continuous grazing has been largely reported to reduce pasture productivity and increase environmental degradation. Rotational grazing is an alternative to continuous grazing and is considered to reduce negative environmental effects and provide qu...
متن کاملHerbaceous Responses to Livestock Grazing in Californian Oak Woodlands: A Review for Habitat Improvement and Conservation Potential
Livestock grazing effects on herbaceous vegetation diversity and ecosystem function are summarized from peer-reviewed literature. Ecosystem responses are linked to grazing management via residual dry matter (RDM), which is alternatively called litter or mulch. Residual dry matter is the dead herbaceous aboveground biomass remaining on a site at the time of autumn germination in annual grassland...
متن کاملRangeland utilization in Mediterranean farming systems.
In the countries surrounding the Mediterranean basin, most of the semi-natural grazing lands are covered by rangelands. Rangelands can be defined as highly heterogeneous natural vegetation communities with high conservation value, growing in harsh environments (poor soils, unfavourable climatic conditions). In the recent socio-economic context, traditional livestock grazing practices that enabl...

This study aims to assess the effect of grazing intensity on vegetation structure, soil nutrient concentrations and soil physical properties. The study was carried out in steppe rangelands of Saveh, Markazi province, Iran. Four sites with four grazing intensities including very high, high, moderate and non-grazed with the same ecological conditions were selected. To study various vegetation and...

Prescribed fire in rangeland ecosystems is applied for a variety of management objectives, including enhancing productivity of forage species for domestic livestock. In the big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata Nutt.) steppe of the western United States, fire has been a natural and prescribed disturbance, temporarily shifting vegetation from shrub–grass codominance to grass dominance. There is li...
